Q1. Why are we doing waste segregation at ACL?

A1. Household waste collected from ACL is usually sent to GHMC and there some of it goes for recycling while the rest goes to a landfill / dump yard in outer parts of Hyderabad. This is not a clean solution from environment standpoint and also creates problems for people living in the vicinity of these massive dump yards. Most effective way to handle this situation is to segregate waste at each household, process it at apartment level and give the rest to external parties for recycling.

Q2. Why now? What if I do not segregate my household wet waste and continue with current process?

A2. Continuing with the current process is not an option anymore. There are strict guidelines from GHMC which mandates all major apartment societies to implement their own wet waste composting solutions. There will be regular checks from the officials and hence we have to do this now. And of course, it is the right thing to do from environment standpoint.

Q3. As a resident, what should I do when it comes to wet waste composting?

A3. You will continue to give daily waste to our house keeping staff (APMS) as usual in the morning. One additional thing that will be done is an extra bin for segregated household kitchen waste. Q4. What exactly qualifies as wet waste?

A4. Kitchen waste like vegetable peels, cooked food, leftover food, etc is considered as wet waste. Please refer to Waste Ventures Model for ACL for more details – https://greenacl.home.blog/2021/07/05/waste-ventures-wv-model-for-acl/

Q5. What is other waste and dry waste?

A5. Other waste can be items like broken wooden things, fragile glass items, medical waste etc that neither qualify as wet waste nor can they be recycled. Dry waste are items like paper, cardboard, plastic items, metal objects etc. These can be recycled easily. Around 500 residents in ACL are already recycling their dry waste using the services of a vendor called Bintix.

Q6. What happens if I leave some paper or wrappers or other such things in the wet waste bin?

A6. Leaving non-wet waste in the green sticker bin creates problems during composting phase. It increases the work load of house keeping staff and also causes the composting process to be less effective. Hence residents have to take extreme care while filling the wet waste bin at their homes.
